  • Jim Rogers on Why Gold Is Glittering So Brightly

Nov 25. 2009 (Businessweek) By Maria Bartiromo: I was
on assignment in Singapore on Nov. 24 when gold hit an
all-time high of $1,174 an ounce. That was fortuitous
because Singapore is the home base of commodities
guru Jim Rogers, creator of the Rogers International
Commodities Index. (see Maria's interview with JR)

Cold snap triggers power shortage in China's Shanxi

    Jan 9, 2010 (AFP) CHINA'S coal-rich Shanxi province
faced its most severe power shortage in three years
as severe cold weather continued to drive up national
electricity demand, state media reported today.
The northern province was rationing electricity as two
major coal-fired electricity plants in the capital Taiyuan
saw their coal reserves fall below the seven-day
supply warning level, the official Xinhua news agency
    reported.

Shanxi is China's coal heartland, the biggest producer
of a fossil fuel that provides 70 per cent of the nation's
fast-growing energy needs. It is also home to many
    coal-burning power plants.

Factories' gas cut off as demand soars

Jan 7, 2010 (Telegraph) - The National Grid has
withdrawn supplies to 94 "very large" gas customers
across England, 55 in the East Midlands and 39 in the
    North West.

It is the first time in 11 years that gas supplies have
been cut, and came as gas demand was expected to
reach a record high of 454 million cubic metres on
Thursday. Britain has poor gas storage capacity: only
15 days' worth when full, compared to more than four
times that in France and Germany.

    'Uncomfortably tight' gas situation...

Canola sector frustrated on lack of Chinese movement

Jan 7, 2010 (Resource News Intl.) -- Canada
continues to be shut out of moving canola seed to
China, with no progress on lessening the current
restrictions or in obtaining import permits, according to
    the Canola Council of Canada.

China is now only allowing canola shipments infected
with the common blackleg fungus into a few select
ports, far away from the country's own canola growing
    and processing areas.

..import permits are required and none have been issued so far..
