  • Drought Saps the Southeast, and Its Farmers

Most of northern Alabama, along with parts of
Mississippi and Georgia, is rated D4, the center's
highest possible level of drought intensity, signifying
an exceptional drought. "I don't plan on having to sell
out this year," Mr. Sanderson said. "But there's only so
much I can handle. If we come out next year with
another year like this, you're going to see a significant
number of farmers go out of business."

    "We're looking at a 70 to 80% loss..."

Sugar, Grains, Cotton Best Commodity Buys, says UBS

Sugar, corn, wheat and cotton may be among the best
commodity investments in the next one to three years
driven by biofuel demand and rising incomes in China
and India, according to UBS AG, the world's largest
    money manager.

    Great idea...

Lead: China Lead Exports to Plunge

China, the world's largest producer of lead, may slash
exports of the metal by more than half after the
government imposed a tax on overseas sales,
worsening a global shortage. Lead, used in car
batteries, is this year's best-performing commodity,
rising 61 percent amid supply disruptions from
    Australia.

"It will speed up industry consolidation..."

China says uranium executive taken hostage in Niger

The kidnapping is one of a string of attacks against
Chinese this year in Africa. A Chinese uranium
company executive has been taken hostage in Niger,
the government said Sunday, the latest kidnapping in
Africa where China is seeking raw materials to feed
    its booming economy.

    Chinese need Niger's Uranium...
