Because of the drought, river water flows will be down,
causing sea water to encroach lower reaches of
plains and river mouths, adversely impacting large
swaths or rice paddy. According to the forecast, the
water level in northern rivers will be at its lowest in the
past 100 years.

According to Xu Wen Ying, general director of Cotton
Textile Industry Association, domestic demand for
cotton was huge. Supply and demand gap in cotton
market this year is expected to be large, and 30
percent of domestic requirement will be fulfilled by
imports.

| Some cotton acres to shift into corn, wheat this year |

The Memphis-based NCC survey shows a 19.6%
decrease in planned cotton acreage for the Mid-South
region, with the survey results in the Southeastern
states pointing towards a shift into corn acreage and
out of cotton. "Except for Tennessee, the sharp
increase in corn prices will draw Mid-South cotton
acreage into corn," Slinsky said in a statement.
